Agile Sciences - Raleigh, NC Tibbetts Nomination
Agile Sciences, Inc. was founded in 2007 by Professors Christian Melander and John Cavanagh of North Carolina State University to provide commercial solutions to those industries plagued by the effects of biofilms and antimicrobial resistance. Agile Sciences has licensed exclusive worldwide rights to the intellectual property generated by the co-founders, which includes 3 issued US patents and 12 pending US, European, and PCT filings. This IP provides broad coverage for a novel class of small molecules, called Agilyte®, with the unprecedented ability to disperse bacteria and fungi from their protective biofilm state so as to render these microbes susceptible to antimicrobial products.
Agile Sciences is pursuing commercialization of its proprietary Agilyte® compounds for agricultural, pharmaceutical, medical device, and industrial applications. In agriculture, every year billions of dollars of crops are lost as a direct result of the formation of biofilms. Biofilms established in the human body are up to ten thousand times more resistant to antibiotics than free-floating, planktonic, bacteria, making them difficult and often impossible to treat medically. Industrial needs for effective biofilm dispersion include filtration membranes, surface coatings and cleansing products.
