Exemplar Genetics 2013 Tibbetts Award Nomination
Exemplar Genetics is an Iowa-based company that was started in 2008. Exemplar Genetics is dedicated to the development of clinically relevant large animal models for chronic human diseases for which there is currently a lack (or lack of satisfactory) treatment options. Exemplar Genetics capitalizes on the amazing anatomical, physiologic, biochemical and histological similarities between pigs and humans as well as expertise in specific gene modification to deliver a reliable model of human disease. Exemplar Genetics has been successful in commercializing its SBIR-funded research (the company currently commercially offers CFTR-/- and CFTR F508del/F508del pigs) and has contributed to the local economy by creating over 20 new jobs since its inception.
Exemplar Genetics’ unique vertically integrated system — genetic modification laboratory to model production system — differentiates them from other firms that offer normal pigs and “induced” pig models of disease since no other gene-targeted, large animal models of human disease have been created. In addition, Exemplar Genetics provides disease model development and disease model characterization services, animal housing and husbandry services, and regulatory and animal cloning services.
