The Virtual Reality Medical Center


The Virtual Reality Medical Center (VRMC) and their affiliated non-profit organization The Interactive Media Institute (IMI), provide a variety of services and educational programs for patients and the public. The Virtual Reality Medical Center has three clinics in California, which offer virtual reality cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders. Specific protocols are available to treat fear of flying, fear of driving, panic disorder with agoraphobia, fear of public speaking, claustrophobia, fear of heights, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following motor vehicle accidents and social phobia. In addition research programs are ongoing which use simulation and virtual reality to; train high school driving students - funded by the Center for Disease Control, prevent teen smoking - funded by the National Institutes of Health, and train combat medics in trauma care - funded by DARPA. The Interactive Media Institute organizes an annual international conference CyberTherapy, which brings together experts who use virtual reality and simulation to treat a wide variety of mental health and medical disorders including eating disorders, drug and other addictions, neuropsychological assessment and treatment, distraction from painful or unpleasant medical procedures, improvements in the quality of life for patients with chronic diseases, and methods to improve rehabilitation and training for musculoskeletal disorders and injuries.
